Leadership Orlando Commencement

Class 91 Receives Board Service Certification

On Wednesday, the members of Class 91 concluded their participation in Leadership Orlando, which began in March under the leadership of Class Chair Min K. Cho, Partner, Holland & Knight LLP. Transforming the experiences of our Leadership Orlando participants during the last eight months into actionable community service was the goal for our final session held at Rollins College.

The new Dean of the Crummer Graduate School of Business, Deborah Crown, Ph.D., shared Thoughts on Leadership as an Essential Management Skill with Class Members. A briefing on volunteer board service was also provided in partnership with Edyth Bush Institute for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership.  By providing new skills, new resources, and new opportunities to connect and engage with regional needs, Class 91 graduates are better prepared to take their next step as community leaders.

These new Leadership Orlando graduates now also enjoy formal certification through a unique partnership with the Central Florida Foundation, the Edyth Bush Institute for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership, and the Central Florida Partnership.  The 90-minute Orientation to Board Service course, presented by The Institute’s consultant, Emily Furlong, provides crucial information on the roles and responsibilities of board members as well as fiduciary expectations and liabilities in volunteer leadership roles.  Many hands went up when asked how many of the class members currently serve on nonprofit boards of directors.

Special remarks and a welcome was provided by Grant H. Cornwell, Ph.D., who became President of Rollins College in July 2015.  Nationally recognized for his work in defining liberal learning in a global environment, Dr. Cornwell told Leadership Orlando Class members that “Broad liberal arts education provides the best platform for the global economy, and Rollins is a is situated in the heart of a dynamic community.”

After lunch and a brief campus tour, Leslie Hartog, a consultant/instructor with the Edyth Bush Institute and Founder and CEO of The Community Seal, provided an overview on Corporate Social Responsibility.

Closing out the session, Robert G. Haight, Senior Vice President Resource Development for Heart of Florida United Way; Flora Maria Garcia, President & CEO of United Arts of Central Florida, Inc.; and Rebekah Stroman, Director of Business and State Engagement, Hiring Our Heroes, U. S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation; participated in a discussion about how to connect and engage as volunteer leaders in Central Florida, moderated by Min Sun Kim, Program Manager at the Edyth Bush Institute.

Class members celebrated their graduation into community service at a reception at nearby blu on the avenue with members of the A-Team (2016 Leadership Alumni Association).

It is with very Special Thanks that we recognize Class Chair Min Cho, for his leadership in guiding Class 91.  To the following members of Leadership Orlando Class 91, we say “Thank You” for your commitment to the Central Florida Region and Congratulations!
